WWI Memorial Journey - Mackay Day Trips

Itineraries

Overview

Description

The Mackay district has many hidden treasures for the cultural tourist. The suggested day trips are in different directions and would be best undertaken individually from a Mackay base, with an option of continuing south to Rockhampton on the second day.

Start by travelling through the lush sugar plantations west of Mackay, detouring to visit historic Greenmount Homestead near Walkerston, passing the sugar mills of Pleystowe and Mirani and heading into the foothills of the Eungella National Park at Finch Hatton. There is an option to spend time enjoying the national parks before returning to Mackay.

The second day might include some relaxation at one of the beaches near Sarina, before visiting cultural tourism attractions in Railway Square, just south of the war memorial on the main road in Sarina. The journey continues on through sugar plantations to Koumala.

Return to Mackay or travel south for about two hours through beef cattle country to Rockhampton.
