#MyMackay promotes local positivity
A simple hashtag is being used as a “pat on the back” for tourism businesses who go above and beyond.
“Have you ever been served by someone and thought ‘they genuinely love what they do’?” asked Mackay Tourism General Manager Tas Webber.
“Or maybe you’ve eaten a dish at a restaurant and wondered how a chef could impart such bliss into a single bite?
“Maybe you’ve taken a tour, hired a charter boat or even just caught a cab and been blown away by the knowledge and skills of your guide, skipper or driver.
“Well, when you’ve had an experience like that, it’s time to start saying ‘that’s my Mackay!
“And don’t keep it to yourself – tell the world!”
Mr Webber said that by posting about positive experiences on social media with the hashtag #MyMackay, residents were showing potential visitors that Mackay was not only open for business, but also excelling at it.
Mayor Greg Williamson said he loved the idea of celebrating businesses that epitomise “MyMackay”.
“We’ve had a downturn; we’ve had a cyclone, but Mackay has bounced back better than ever,” Cr Williamson said.
“Now’s the time to spread that positivity – after all, that kind of pride and enthusiasm is infectious,” he said.
“Our region has some amazing tourism assets run by some exceptional people, and it’s time they got a pat in the back.
“They’ve traded through some tough times, but they’ve come out the other side with heads held high and a great attitude, so it’s time they were recognised for that.”
So, next time you’re sipping a sweet Sugar Shed Rum, catching a coral trout on a mind-blowing charter, chatting to a friendly lifeguard on the beach or zipping down a flying fox at Finch Hatton, don’t forget to spread a little Mackay positivity.
You can do that by simply sharing a positive experience, along with the hashtag, on social media.
Or, if you want to win some amazing prizes – photograph, paint, draw or write about your #MyMackay moment and send it in to Mackay Tourism.
The overall winner will score a weekend away for six people at the stunning Keswick Island, including accommodation, flights and groceries.
The runners up prizes also feature local tourism superstars – a high tea for six at the Old Station Teahouse and a Rainforest Scuba platypus dive for two.
Judging the competition is Chrissy Evangelou (Mackay Region Chamber of Commerce), Greg Williamson (Mackay Regional Council), Rob Porter (Mackay Airport) and Sharmin Messer (The Hungry Travellers).
Winners will be announced at the Mackay Airport Beach Horse Races on August 19 and the best entries will also be on display.
The competition is open to anyone in the Mackay and Isaac regions, and full terms and conditions can be found on Mackay Tourism’s website.
Entries close July 31 and can be submitted online at www.mackayregion.com/mymackay or through the Mackay Visitor Information Centre on Nebo Road.
