Sarina Icon to Shine at Australian Tourism Awards

An icon of Sarina and the Mackay Region, the Sarina Sugar Shed, will be hoping its third time lucky in its quest for gold at Friday nights Australian Tourism Awards.

It’s been a big year for the Sarina Sugar Shed after winning its third straight gold medal at the Queensland Tourism Awards and being inducted into the Queensland Tourism Hall of Fame.

The Sarina Sugar Shed has recently reopened following renovations and now sports a refurbished gift shop for the estimated 16,000 annual visitors to purchase the award-winning rum, liqueurs and other produce made from locally grown sugar cane processed in the sugar mill and distillery.

The Australian Tourism Awards take place tomorrow night at Perth Stadium and will be the first corporate event at the recently completely stadium. Recognising tourism operators across 25 categories, the awards are expected to attract more than 800 people including Federal and State Tourism Ministers and prominent industry leaders.

General Manager of Mackay Tourism, Tas Webber wishes the Sarina Sugar Shed the best of luck. “I think most locals and visitors we have welcomed to the region have experienced the famous Sarina Sugar Shed mill tour and tasted some of their delicious local produce. Winning the Excellence in Food Tourism award at the Australian Tourism Awards would be the crowning achievement for all the hard undertaken by the Sugar Shed over many years”.

“The awards will showcase to Australia not only the Sugar Shed, but the Mackay regions local produce and tourism industry. We wish the Sarina Sugar Shed the very best of luck.”
